We’ll sing well-loved tunes and new ones, songs with words and without. Come join Hinenu for evenings of music, preparing us to enter the month of Elul. Singing together is a great way to loosen up for the High Holidays – and to get more familiar with some of the tunes we’ll sing at services.

Please bring a chair if you can. We will distance so that we can sing without masks.

Access: Steps or an incline into the back yard. Parking pad for 2 cars – email ahead to miriam.avins@gmail.com. A step into the house to the bathroom.

The Revolutionary Necessity of Hoda’ah: A new year study on appreciation in our relationships and movement spaces

So often in our work of teshuvah (return and repair) at this time of year we note what is broken, what needs accountability and healing between people. In our movement spaces, facing off against frightening and violent injustices, we focus on what is broken, what must be corrected for human life to flourish. In our relationships and organizing, it is all too easy to neglect honoring that which is delightful, celebrating victories, sharing gratitude for one another.

From Autumn: I recently started reading the book, This is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared: The Days of Awe as a Journey of Transformation, by the late Rabbi Alan Lew. Instead of reading it alone, I welcome you to join me in reading and discussing this book during the month of Elul.

We will have a discussion every Shabbat from 1-2pm EST on Zoom from August 20th to September 17th. Our last discussion will be in-person at Pearlstone on Yom Kippur. Audio versions of the book are also available. I look forward to seeing you on Zoom and please contact me if you have any questions at drautumnmreed@gmail.com

Are you looking to explore ways of practicing Teshuvah - return - in preparation for the High Holy Days? Do you not really connect spiritually to the High Holy Days, but want to experience an engaged mindfulness practice with a small group?

This class is an opportunity to explore some fundamental components of mindfulness meditation through guided practice, didactic talks, and time for questions and reflections.

Apple Picking

September 18

This Elul season, Hinenu once again welcomes you to join us for apple picking at Baugher's Orchard in Westminster, Maryland on Sunday, September 18th. Since Baugher's does not host groups, this will be an informal meet up. We plan to be there around 10-11am, but feel free to stop by anytime to pick apples from 9-5pm, weather permitting.

Address:

Baugher's Orchard and Farm

1015 Baugher Rd
Westminster, MD 21158

Accessibility:

We have learned from Baugher's Farm that they have a shuttle bus to take us to the orchard. However, the shuttle bus has some steps to get to the seats (photo included). Once the shuttle gets to the orchard we would need to walk a bit to get to the trees with some apples for picking. For those of us that might need an accommodation, Baugher's can provide a special pass where we can drive to the orchard, but some walking would be necessary to access the apples in the grassy areas.

Please note, in our research of local apple orchards, Baugher's was the only one that responded to our accessibility questions.

Other Logistics:

  • Baugher's, like other orchards, does not accept group reservations. Therefore, we are organizing this activity informally.

  • Baugher charges a $3 entrance fee, per person, for picking in the field. Children under 3 are free.

  • In addition to the free, you pay for apples by bag size, which ranges from $12-$30. You get about 25lbs of apples for the large bag.

  • Before leaving your house, it is helpful to call their Picking Hotline at 410-857-0111 to see what is ripe for harvesting that day.

  • Farm Rules:

    • No strollers, backpacks, large totes, coolers, or blankets in the fields

    • No picnicking in the fields

    • No pets except service animals

    • Be respectful of the land

    • No rain checks/refund on tickets

Sukkot
You are invited to join us in the Hinenu Sukkah all week! The Sukkah is hosted at the Church of the Guardian Angel on 2631 Huntingdon Ave, Baltimore, MD 21211. There is a paved ramp onto the patio where the Sukkah sits, as well as stairs. Bathrooms are accessible when there are programs. Please use the bathrooms at R House any other time, 301 W 29th St, Baltimore, MD 21211. We encourage you to spend as much time as you like in the Sukkah (please do not sleep there overnight, though.) There is a lulav and etrog that will be stored beneath the table for your use. Please make sure to leave the Sukkah just a little better than you found it by tidying up after yourself, or bringing a picture of an ancestor to hang on our communal Ushpizin wall of guests we invite into the Sukkah!

Please register so we know to expect you! All events are weather permitting (as we've learned the hard way this season...) Check the Hinenu calendar for updates if it looks questionable outside. Make sure to dress for the weather!

Register here | 10am-1pm | Hinenu Sukkah in Remington

In honor of Sukkot, join Hinenu member Vanessa Lubiner of Shykoach! Candles for a beeswax candlemaking workshop. In this workshop, participants will learn traditions around Jewish candlemaking, the lessons of bees, sacred text on the topic, and how candles are made. Though candles can be created in a multitude of ways, this workshop will focus on dipping, which allows the wax to layer upon itself like the rings of the tree trunk. Each participant will leave with Shabbat candles or havdallah candles. Cost of the workshop and materials is $36-108.

Please note the class is capped at 18 participants.
